Let’s clear one thing up first thing; I’m not necessarily going to talk about doing what you love to make a living.  Maybe you can make money doing what you love, but perhaps that is not feasible for your life.  For example, if you love traveling and camping in an RV, and dream of one day living and traveling in an RV full time, you might not be able to make a living doing so.  But, you can build a life that can work toward that dream.

For some people, figuring out what you love to do, to build a dream around that, is a tough question.  Let’s see if we can help you get started figuring out what you love so you can start creating a dream around it.

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU REALLY LOVE TO DO

1. WHAT DID YOU LOVE TO DO AS A CHILD?

We all experienced our childhood differently and collected different knowledge, beliefs, and meaning from it. Regardless of how you feel about your childhood, there is something you can take away from it.  Ask yourself, how did you play as a child? You can also consider how your childhood self would view your adult self.

As a child, I loved being creative.  But I also loved being outside and in, on, or around water.  For me, that has turned into a love of gardening and creating a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle.  I utilize my garden to the fullest, creating not only food but health and beauty products, cleaning products, and more.  These loves have added a new dimension to my dream of living on a Caribbean island.

2. WHAT MAKES YOU FORGET TO CHECK YOUR PHONE?

Whatever you engage in, something that allows you to disconnect from the world around you is a big hint of something you love to do.  Being fully immersed in activity is healthy.  I will also tell you that this is an excellent time to let your mind explore that activity to its fullest and allow dreams to materialize.

An example of forgetting to check my phone is kayaking.  When I’m in a kayak, I disconnect from the world.  It’s a safe place to allow dreams to materialize without influence by the expectations of the world around me.

3. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO SAVE THE WORLD?

To live a happy and healthy life, we must hold on to values that are greater than our pleasure or satisfaction.  There are plenty of problems in the world you can choose.  Find an issue you care about and contribute to solving it.

For example, if homelessness is a problem that bothers you, get involved in organizations that tackle that problem.  And going back to the example at the beginning of having a dream to travel full-time in an RV, you could travel to different areas to help build houses in impoverished communities.

A problem that I will be addressing with my dream of living on a Caribbean island, food shortage related to the pandemic.  My love of gardening took a turn to learn new gardening techniques to address sustainable gardening in tropical conditions.

4. IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE THE HOUSE ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

For many, the enemy of figuring out what you love to do and turning it into a dream is good old fashioned complacency.  The couch is comfy, there are snacks in the kitchen, and a Netflix series that could suck you in for an entire weekend.  I understand that sometimes we get burned out, and being a couch potato is at the top of the list for what we want to do.  But that is a problem related to lack of self-care, it’s not something that creates energy and fuels your soul.

Doing what you love is a full-contact sport.  So, if you could only be home to sleep and take a shower, what would you do with your time?

 5. IF YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO DIE ONE YEAR FROM TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO AND HOW do YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?

Time is our most precious resource.  Many of us take it for granted.  So instead of thinking you can put off doing what you love to do, imagine you have one year left to do the things you’ve always wanted to do.  And take that one step further and think about how you want people to remember you?

I’ve been living this way for a few years now.  It has kept me on track, pushing hard to live out my dreams, doing more and more of what I love to do.  Because of that, I am becoming more of a person who embodies how I want people to remember me.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE

Life is short, and we must live it to the fullest.  Do what you love because you’ll never get this life again.
